Evidence Synthesis Reviews

What are inclusion & exclusion criteria?

Pre-defined criteria of which studies will be included in your synthesis

How to choose inclusion & exclusion criteria?

Start with a preliminary search.

Has this question been addressed before? Long ago?

Is there information to find?

  • Found RCTs for interventional question? Consider meta-analysis
  • Found cohort studies for relational question? Consider meta-regression!
  • Found qualitative studies for qualitative question? Consider meta-synthesis / meta-aggregation

Helps you to define the question

How to structure inclusion & exclusion criteria?

Specify an inclusion criterion for part of your question

For example, for a PICO question, have an inclusion criterion for each of:

  • Population
  • Intervention
  • Comparison
  • Outcome
  • Study designs
