Types of Reviews

Overview of NSLHD Libraries services and resources to help you understand and undertake a range of review types.

What is a Rapid Review?

The Cochrane Rapid Reviews Methods Group provides the following definition: “A rapid review is a form of knowledge synthesis that accelerates the process of conducting a traditional systematic review through streamlining or omitting specific methods to produce evidence for stakeholders in a resource-efficient manner.”

Characteristics of a rapid review include:

  • focused, narrow question
  • applies systematic review methodology within a time-constrained setting
  • requires transparent reporting of the stages of the review process restricted or omitted
  • good for new or emerging research topics or to support urgent decision making

Timeframe: typically less than 5 weeks, though will vary depending on resources available, literature being synthesised/appraised and experience of reviewers.
