Adding references

There are many ways to add references to an EndNote Library.

  • export multiple records from databases
  • importing PDF files and folders
  • adding references manually

Note: Check all citations after exporting to EndNote for errors and edit if necessary

In most databases like Medline, CINAHL and PubMed, and on major publishers' websites, you can directly expport references into your EndNote Library.

Direct export option varies from database to database.

To select and export multiple records:

  • Conduct a search, and select the records you wish to export.
  • Go to your Selected Items, they may be in a Marked Items section or a Temporary Folder.
  • Select a Direct Export function, and choose EndNote or RIS format (EndNote).
  • Follow the prompts on your browser to export the records into EndNote.
  • The records will now appear in the Imported References folder of your Endnote Library.
  • Check your references for any errors and add your own notes

Use the  below each Google Scholar citation to import references from Google Scholar.

You can create a reference by importing a PDF into your EndNote library. This works best when your PDF has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). A DOI is a unique number assigned to digital resources.

  • Click on File > Import
  • Choose File or Folder, depending on whether you have single or multiple PDFs
  • Browse to locate the PDF or folder of PDFs
  • Choose PDF as the Import Option.
  • Click Import
  • EndNote will create a reference, and attach the PDF(s)

Note: Citation details in PDFs scanned from a hard copy will not import into EndNote. If EndNote was unable to complete the fields, the reference will only contain the PDF, and you will need to fill out the fields manually.
